An Enlightened King & Prime Minister

There is little doubt Bhutan boasts an enviable record of handling the Covid-19 pandemic. This stems, in part, from the masterful talent, guidance & effort of two men. His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering.

5th King Jigme is affectionately known as ‘K5’. He recently trekked across swathes of Bhutan to ensure remote villagers were updated on the perils of COVID-19. As well as the measures they needed to adopt to protect themselves from the virus.

Meanwhile, back in the capital Thimphu, PM Lotay practised his trade as a surgeon & urologist. Furthermore, keeping close tabs on the virus and working tirelessly at Thimphu hospital. Even sleeping in his humble office at the hospital and remaining constantly ‘on call’.

Bhutan's Latest Covid-19 Stats & Vaccinations

As at 14 July, Bhutan has still only recorded one death directly linked to the coronavirus. No mean feat and an outstanding achievement. Especially when one considers Bhutan is wedged in-between the giants of south Asia; India & China! To date there have been a total of 2290 cases of Covid-19, of which 1986 have recovered.

Bhutan’s vaccination program is one of the world’s best. All eligible adults have completed their first vaccination. The second round is expected to be completed by end of August 2021.

A massive thank you to the USA for sending Bhutan another 500,000 doses this week, plus a further 1.5m to Nepal.
