    Exploring Colombo.

    Breakfast incl today.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out for a full day dedicated to exploring Colombo, the vibrant commercial capital of Sri Lanka. A dynamic blend of cultures, history, and commerce, Colombo has long been a significant port—once visited by Arab traders and later colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. Today, the city offers a rich array of experiences. Visit remarkable cultural landmarks, including Buddhist temples and Hindu Kovils, reflecting the country’s diverse religious and ethnic heritage. Day 3:

    Colombo to Sigiriya

Breakfast incl today. Drive time 4-5 hrs

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and set off for your next destination—Sigiriya. Upon arrival, you’ll check in to your hotel and enjoy some time to relax and unwind before the afternoon excursion.

At approximately 3:00 PM, you’ll embark on an exciting visit to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, aiming to reach the summit by sunset. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated landmarks, Sigiriya is a breathtaking ancient citadel built atop a towering 200-meter rock column by King Kashyapa (477–495 A.D.).

The site is renowned for its beautifully landscaped Water Gardens, the exquisite frescoes of celestial maidens, the mirror-like graffiti-covered wall, and the grand Lion’s Platform, where only the giant paws remain of the original lion structure that once served as the entrance to the summit. The summit itself—once home to an elaborate royal palace—spans 1.6 hectares and offers panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and countryside.

As you ascend, you’ll explore a network of moats, ramparts, and ornamental gardens that once formed a fortified city spread across 70 hectares. The climb also leads past the remarkable spiral stairway to the frescoes, painted in natural earth pigments on plaster and sheltered in a cave-like recess. At the top, the remnants of meditation caves, bathing pools, and audience halls tell stories of an era of grandeur and architectural brilliance.
This awe-inspiring journey through history and nature is sure to be one of the highlights of your time in Sri Lanka.

Overnight Sigiriya options: Elephas Resort (‘Modest’ 3-star in a deluxe room) or Sigiriya Jungles Resort (‘Plush’ 4-star in a Deluxe room) or Aliya Resort (‘Dreamy’ Luxury boutique in a Deluxe room).

    Day 4:

Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Minneriya Excursion
    Breakfast and lunch included today.

This morning, undertake an excursion to the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO world heritage site, is the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. King Vijayabahu 1 was the first to claim the city as his capital and it was King Parakramabahu who made it what it is today – massive buildings, ornate parks and a 2500 hectare tank called ‘Parakrama Samudra’ (‘Sea of Parakrama’).

The city itself is divided into new and old town with the impressively preserved ruins split into five main areas, including ‘The Quadrangle’ (a.k.a. ‘Terrace of the Tooth Relic’), the Northern City group and the Rest House group (with the royal palace ruins of ‘Nissanka Malla’).

Due to its reasonably compact layout, the ruins can be easily explored on foot, and with the surrounding area’s flat well maintained roads, you can leave the car behind and jump on a bicycle to move around.

Your lunch today is included, and will be arranged in a local restaurant called “Priyamalee Gedara” which is operated by a local family. The name of the home-style restaurant ‘Priyamali’ is derived from the names of the father and mother – Deva‘priya’ and ‘Mali’ni. This culinary family of 5 (mum, dad, 2 daughters and son-inlaw) personally cook and serve hearty Sri Lankan meals to locals and curious travellers who seek authentic Sri Lankan flavours.

After lunch, head for the Minneriya National Park, a protected wildlife reserve in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Dry Zone. Its main feature is the Minneriya Reservoir, the largest of 16 built in the 3rd Century AD by King Mahasena. Minneriya National Park is home to one of the most spectacular natural events in the world – the Elephant Gathering. In the dry months of August and September, about 300 elephants from the park and the surrounding area – including the Wasgamuwa National Park – gather at the reservoir in large numbers to get much-needed refreshment.

    Day 5:

    Sigiriya to Kandy

Breakfast incl today. Approx 3 hrs drive time.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and visit the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple.

Located in the north-central province, Dambulla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with origins dating back to the 1st century BC. This remarkable complex consists of five caves, originally used as a refuge by an ancient king who, upon reclaiming his throne, commissioned intricate carvings into the rock.

Subsequent kings made further enhancements, resulting in over 150 Buddha images within the caves, including a colossal figure spanning 15 meters.

Cave inscriptions from the 2nd century BC are present, and the walls feature numerous paintings, mostly from the Kandy period in the early 19th century. The temple is a significant location for witnessing the evolution of ancient Sri Lankan art, representing an amalgamation of materials from various eras.

After completing the visit,  travel towards Kandy, stopping at a local spice garden along the way, before continuong on to Kandy, a charming city known as the Hill Capital and the last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings. Kandy retains an aura of grandeur, encircled by hills with a tranquil lake at its center. It is home to the renowned Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanical Gardens, which house one of the best collections of orchids. Kandy and its surrounding villages are the center of the island’s handicraft industry, and its traditional dances are the most spectacular in the country.

Upon arrival, you’ll check in to your hotel before visiting the iconic Temple of the Tooth—locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa. This revered temple dates back to the 16th century, though much of its current structure was developed in the 19th century. Enshrined within is the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, carefully preserved in a golden casket and protected in the Inner Chamber. The temple complex itself is a masterpiece of architecture, featuring intricate carvings and paintings that illustrate scenes from the life of the Buddha. Deeply spiritual and historically rich, the temple remains a vibrant center of daily worship and cultural heritage.

OPTION this evening to attend  a cultural dance performance.

Overnight Kandy options: Thilanka Hotel (‘Modest’ 3-star in a deluxe room) or Mountbatten Bungalow (‘Plush’ 4-star in a Bungalow room) or W15 Hantana Resort (‘Dreamy’ Luxury boutique in a Stable Suite room).

    Day 6:

    Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Breakfast incl today. Approx 3 drive time.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel around 9:30 AM and depart for Nuwara Eliya, en-route stopping at a traditional tea factory where you’ll have the opportunity to witness the entire tea-making process, culminating in a delightful cup of the world’s finest tea, all while enjoying a scenic view of the tea plantation. Sri Lanka’s hill country is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest teas.

Continue on to Nuwara Eliya, check into your hotel, and spend some time relaxing this afternoon. In the evening, take a brief stroll around the charming town of Nuwara Eliya (option to do this alone or with your guide).

Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country. It is the home of the famous Ceylon Tea, and the rolling mountains are a carpet of velvety green tea plantations, interspersed with gushing streams and tumbling waterfalls. The salubrious climate, misty glens, and decidedly British character make Nuwara Eliya a must on any Sri Lankan travel itinerary.

Overnight Nuwara Eliya options: Galway Heights Hotel (‘Modest’ 3-star in a deluxe room) or Grand Hotel (‘Plush’ 4-star in a deluxe room) or Heritance Tea Factory Hotel (‘Dreamy’ 5-star in a Superior room).

    Day 7:

Breafast included today. Approx 2.5 hrs by train and 15-20 mins by driving.

After breakfast, depending on the train schedule for the day,  check out and proceed to Nanu Oya Railway Station to board the train to Ella.

This 2.5-hour train journey is an unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking views of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. As the train winds its way through the mountains, you’ll pass lush tea plantations, misty valleys, and charming villages. The scenery is truly mesmerizing, with every turn revealing landscapes that seem straight out of a postcard. It’s a journey that promises to be as captivating as the destination itself.

Upon arriving in Ella, you will be transferred to your hotel nearby and the remainder of the day is at leisure.

Overnight Ella options: Morning Dew Hotel (‘Modest’ 3-star in a Deluxe room) or Hide Ella Hotel (‘Plush’ 4-star in a Deluxe room) or 98 Acres Resort (‘Dreamy’ 5-star in a Premium Deluxe room).

    Day 8:

    ELLA HIKING

Breakfast incl today. 8.7km hiking a section of the Pekoe Trail. Rated MODERATE meaning a moderate degree of fitness ideal for this hike.

After breakfast, hike Stage 16 of the Pekoe Trail, from Ella to Demodara.

Starting in the popular hill-country town of Ella, known for its tea plantations and natural beauty, you’ll traverse the Ella Forest Reserve, passing the famous Nine Arches Bridge, a popular spot for photos. The trail offers stunning views of the bridge from various vantage points as it winds through small local villages.

You’ll climb along village roads towards the Newburgh Tea Factory, then zigzag through chena cultivations, tea estates, railway tracks, and a small lake. One of the highlights is the Demodara Tea Estate, surrounded by scenic tea trails. The stage concludes at the picturesque Demodara train station, renowned for its spiral rail line, the ‘Demodara Loop’, where the track passes under itself through a tunnel directly beneath the station.

After completing the hike, return to your Ella hotel to relax. This evening take the opportunity to explore the famous Ella Town.

OPTIONAL ADVANCED HIKE – PEKOE TRAIL STAGE 17 (13.5 KM | MODERATE TO CHALLENGING) = Surcharge USD 25 Per Person and including snacks on the hike.

For adventure enthusiasts, we can swap the short morning walk for a rewarding 13.5 km hike (takes 3-4 hrs) along Stage 17 of the Pekoe Trail, a scenic and moderately challenging route that winds through the misty hills of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

This stage begins at the picturesque Demodara Railway Station, famous for the engineering marvel known as the Demodara Loop—a unique spiral rail line where the track loops under itself, passing through a tunnel beneath the very station it serves. According to local legend, the inspiration came from a tea estate supervisor who unwound and re-tied his turban in a looping fashion—much like the track itself.

As you make your way along the Demodara–Spring Valley Road, you’ll pass through lush tea fields, cross the Badulla Bridge, encounter a charming creek bridge, and walk by a colonial-era tea estate and a lively village playground. The trail culminates at its highest point with breathtaking panoramic views over Demodara and Ella—an ideal spot to pause and soak in the beauty of the landscape.

This is an immersive trek ideal for those seeking a deeper connection with Sri Lanka’s highland terrain and heritage.
