Things to See & Do in Thimphu - Part 1:

Thimphu is the quirky capital city of beautiful Bhutan.

A good friend, and long-time expat resident of Bhutan, suggested Thimphu will become one of the ‘great cities of South Asia. And a centre for education’. Already Thimphu is certainly one of the most attractive and healthy cities to visit in this region.

With much cleaner air, than most South Asian major population centres, Thimphu benefits from a forward thinking Government.  Thimphu ranks has a welcoming city for visitors to the Kingdom. And one that offers a wide range of things to see and do.

THIMPHU IS EASY TO GET TO:

The city is just over a1 hour scenic drive from Bhutan’s sole international airport in nearby Paro vallery. This makes Thimphu the perfect place to start your Bhutan experience.

SO MUCH TO SEE & DO!

Not only does Thimphu have spectacular dzongs and lhakhangs (temples) but it also has an extensive range of hotels to suit all budgets.

Furthermore there is excellent hiking for most levels of fitness and a vibrant weekend market. It is the home for our Royal Enfield motorcycle tours and a start point for a number of high altitude treks.  Recently mountain biking trails have been established in the hills above the city.

There are also excellent weavings & textiles academies & outlets. Plus a burgeoning local art scene, coffee shops, bars & nightlife.

SUCH A SAFE DESTINATION!

Most importantly Thimphu, and Bhutan in general, offers visitors a very safe environment. Which makes Bhutan an excellent family destination.

You will want at least 2 nights in Thimphu to see the essential sights. Almost all of our Bhutan & Beyond suggested itineraries commence with 2 nights in Thimphu.

At an altitude of approx 2300m (the same as Paro airport) Thimphu is also a great spot for acclimatizing before traversing higher passes between valleys. Or for  undertaking a high altitude trek.

Thimphu is always included in our extensive range of private Bhutan tours and small group Bhutan tours.
